Blessed Jeanne Jugan

The Congregation of The Little Sisters of the Poor is an International Missionary Institution founded by Jeanne Jugan, a humble woman from Cancale, a small fishing village in Brittany, France in 1839.

There are nearly 4,000 sisters continuing the vision of Jeanne Jugan by serving the more than 22,000 elderly in over 206 Homes for the Aged in 34 Countries accross 5 continents around the world.

On November 30, 1882 eight Little Sisters sailed from Marseille, France on the 'Typher' and founded the first Home for the Aged in India in Calcutta. Set up in 1934, The Home for the Aged, Chennai is one of the 12 Homes which are run by the Little Sisters of the Poor in India.
